Frequently Asked Questions
General Eligibility Questions
Are over-the-counter (OTC) medications FSA, HSA, or HRA eligible?
Yes. Most OTC medications, including pain relievers, allergy medicine, cold and flu treatments, sleep aids, and heartburn medication, are eligible without a prescription.
Are pain relief and recovery devices eligible?
Many are. Products such as heating pads, ice packs, braces and supports, TENS units, and compression sleeves are typically eligible when used to treat or prevent a medical condition.
Can I use my FSA, HSA, or HRA for massage guns or heating pads?
Heating pads are generally eligible. Massage guns may be eligible if used for a diagnosed medical condition, and may require a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) depending on your plan. If you're unsure, check with your plan administrator or HR department before purchasing.
Are menstrual care products eligible?
Yes. Menstrual products—including pads, tampons, liners, menstrual cups, and period underwear—are permanently eligible under the CARES Act.
Can I buy sunscreen with my FSA, HSA, or HRA?
Yes. Sunscreen is eligible if it has SPF 15 or higher and provides broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) protection. Lotions, sprays, and sticks all qualify if they meet these requirements.
Are skincare products eligible?
Skincare items are eligible only if they treat a medical condition, such as acne, eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis. Cosmetic-only products (anti-aging creams, cosmetic serums, beauty masks) are not eligible unless prescribed or supported by an LMN.
Can I use my account for glasses, contacts, or vision care?
Yes. Eligible vision expenses typically include prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses, contact lenses and solution, eye exams, LASIK, and other corrective procedures.
Are dental products eligible?
Many dental products and services are eligible, including sensitivity toothpaste, orthodontic supplies, mouth guards, dental exams, and treatments. Cosmetic dental procedures (like teeth whitening) are not eligible.
Can I buy thermometers, blood pressure monitors, or health devices?
Yes. Many diagnostic and monitoring devices are eligible, such as thermometers, blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, and glucose monitors. While these devices are commonly covered under FSA and HSA plan, they might not be covered under some HRA plans. If you're unsure, check with your plan administrator or HR department to confirm eligibility.
Are fertility, pregnancy, and baby health items eligible?
Eligibility may vary by plan, especially for advanced fertility treatments. Still, many items are eligible, such as ovulation predictors, pregnancy tests, prenatal vitamins, breast pumps, baby thermometers, and nasal aspirators.
Can I use my funds for mental health or wellness products?
Mental health treatments, including therapy and psychiatric services, are typically eligible. Wellness products (such as weighted blankets or meditation devices) may require a Letter of Medical Necessity if not directly tied to a diagnosed condition.
Account-Specific Questions
What's the difference between an FSA, HSA, and HRA?
Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
- Employer-sponsored
- Funded by pre-tax payroll deductions
- Usually subject to "use-it-or-lose-it" rules
- May offer a grace period or limited rollover
Health Savings Account (HSA)
- Available with a qualified High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)
- Funds roll over year after year
- Account is owned by you (not your employer)
- Can earn interest or be invested
Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA)
- Funded entirely by your employer
- Reimburses eligible medical expenses
- Funds typically do not move with you if you leave your job
- Rules vary by employer plan design
Do FSA funds expire?
Yes. Most FSAs are subject to "use-it-or-lose-it" rules.
However, some plans offer a grace period (typically 2.5 extra months) or a rollover (a limited amount of funds from the previous plan year roll over into the new plan year). Check your specific plan or ask your plan administrator to confirm your deadline for spending FSA funds.
Do HSA funds expire?
No. HSA funds roll over indefinitely from year to year. There is no deadline to spend your balance.
Do HRA funds expire?
It depends on your employer's plan. Some HRAs allow limited rollover, while others require you to use funds within the plan year. Check with your plan administrator or HR department to confirm your plan rules.
What happens if I buy a non-eligible item?
If you use FSA, HSA, or HRA funds for a non-eligible purchase, your claim might be denied, you may need to repay the amount to your account, and you could face tax penalties (for HSAs). Shopping from an online store like ours that clearly labels eligible items can help reduce this risk!
How do I know if a product is eligible?
To confirm a product is eligible:
- Check your plan administrator's eligibility list
- Look for clearly labeled eligible products
- Review IRS Section 213(d) medical expense guidelines
- Contact your benefits provider directly
Our store clearly marks FSA/HSA-eligible products to make shopping simple.
